Winning with Respect: Building Messaging that Strengthens Transgender Rights
Jan 22, 2025
In a world where rights for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals are increasingly under attack, our language matters. The Transgender Law Center’s Narrative Lab recently released powerful insights into messaging strategies that resonate with persuadable audiences. Their findings reveal opportunities to move hearts and minds by emphasizing respect for the freedom to live authentically over defensive narratives centered on "protection." You can watch the training here.
Why Respect Matters
The Narrative Lab found that 62% of Americans agree with the statement: “Transgender individuals should have the freedom to be themselves and live their lives.” This broad base of agreement demonstrates that we are not just fighting for what is right—we are already on the winning team. Yet, only half of people surveyed believe others in their state share this perspective. By confidently asserting that we are a majority, we can help build momentum for equality.
"Respect" Outshines "Protect"
Messaging that frames transgender rights in terms of respect for everyone, rather than protection for a specific group, outperforms narratives that counter right-wing rhetoric about “radical gender ideology.” For example, emphasizing mutual respect—“whether transgender or not”—broadens the appeal of our message and makes it relatable. While protecting transgender youth is critical, leading with shared values of respect and freedom creates a stronger emotional connection with persuadable audiences.
Building a Bigger "We"
Expanding our messaging to include everyone—not just TGD individuals—helps audiences see the universal benefits of a world where all people are free to be themselves. When our messaging reflects the broader principle that respecting transgender individuals uplifts everyone, we create bridges with those outside our base and foster solidarity.
Putting Insights Into Action
Here’s how we can translate these lessons into our advocacy and care practices:
- Highlight shared values. Instead of framing issues around fear or defensiveness, focus on respect, inclusion, and shared humanity. For example: “Everyone deserves the freedom to live authentically, without fear or judgment.”
- Claim the majority. Remind your audience that support for transgender rights is widespread: “Most Americans agree that respecting each other’s identities makes our communities stronger.”
- Center joy and resilience. Sharing stories of transgender joy and triumph, like those in the Good News Bank, can combat negativity and inspire hope.
Expanding Your Impact

By aligning our language with these research-backed strategies, we can not only counter anti-trans narratives but also uplift a vision of a world rooted in respect, freedom, and shared humanity. At QueerCME, we’re proud to be part of this movement, empowering clinicians to deliver affirming care and disrupt the cis-hetero-patriarchal status quo in healthcare.
Together, we can move hearts, inspire change, and ensure that every TGD person has the freedom to be themselves—and thrive.
