Top 3 Resources for Older Trans Patients
Oct 02, 2023Geriatric trans patients need resources about aging that are affirming and inclusive.
My top three are:
- SAGE: We’re a national advocacy and services organization that’s been looking out for LGBTQ+ elders since 1978. We build welcoming communities and keep our issues in the national conversation to ensure a fulfilling future for all LGBTQ+ people. I particularly appreciate their Long-Term Care Equality Index.
- FORGE: FORGE reduces the impact of trauma on trans/non-binary survivors and communities by empowering service providers, advocating for systems reform, and connecting survivors to healing possibilities. FORGE strives to create a world where ALL voices, people and bodies are valued, respected, honored, and celebrated; where every individual feels safe, supported, respected, and empowered. FORGE helped me find TAN which is number 3 on this list! They also keep a list of resources for aging folx here.
- TAN (Transgender Aging Network): TAN supports ElderTG which is a support and networking e-mail list for both MTF and FTM transsexual, transgender, and intersex persons aged 50 and older and SOFFAs (significant others, friends, family, and allies) of such persons.
Don’t forget to check locally. Seattle has GenPRIDE which is a local non-profit organization dedicated to supporting aging LGBTQ+ community.
Next week I will review training resources for clinicians working with elderly trans patients.
