Dr. Crystal Beal on the Gender Spiral Podcast – Redefining Gender Affirming Care

Nov 18, 2024

We’re thrilled to share that QueerCME’s founder, Dr. Crystal Beal, recently joined the Gender Spiral podcast to discuss what truly affirming, accessible, and patient-centered care should look like for trans and nonbinary individuals. In a powerful conversation with host Ally, Dr. Beal dove into the essentials of gender affirming care, telehealth’s critical role, and the fierce need for advocacy in the face of rising healthcare bans.

Breaking Down Barriers in Gender Affirming Care

Dr. Beal spoke candidly about the challenges of today’s healthcare system, from systemic barriers to the stigma surrounding gender affirming care (GAC). Highlighting the impacts of recent bans on trans healthcare in multiple states, Dr. Beal discussed how legislation directly affects the mental health and survival of trans youth. “We are facing the genocide of a generation of trans adolescents,” Dr. Beal emphasized, pointing out recent data that ties healthcare bans to increased suicide rates among trans youth. This alarming reality underscores the importance of accessible, affirming care, a cornerstone of Dr. Beal’s work with QueerCME and QueerDoc.

QueerDoc: Care that Meets You Where You Are

As one of the first trans-owned telehealth practices, QueerDoc was founded to give trans and gender-diverse patients a safe, understanding space for care—without the restrictions of location or rigid healthcare systems. Dr. Beal noted that for many, telehealth offers vital protections: “Just to get on my tablet or phone and know I won’t face physical violence on the way to an office, or be unable to use a bathroom safely—it’s huge.” This virtual model, which fosters autonomy, has become essential for many, especially given the ongoing legislative and social challenges.

Reimagining the Standard for Informed Consent and Patient Autonomy

Dr. Beal and Ally also explored the shift toward informed consent in GAC, moving away from outdated, gatekeeping requirements. They emphasized that healthcare should allow patients the freedom to try hormone therapy without stigma and recognize the individuality of their journeys. “If you’re an adult, you should have agency. You get tattoos; you make other life choices. This should be no different,” Dr. Beal asserted, dismantling misconceptions around the process and empowering listeners to advocate for care that aligns with their unique goals.
